In this guide we will tell you everything you need to know about eyeliner. We will talk about what eyeliner's the different styles you can get, what it feels like to get it done, how it heals and most importantly if it is right, for you and your eyeliner needs.

What Is Permanent Eyeliner?

Permanent Eyeliner also known as an eyeliner tattoo or eyeliner tattoo is a kind of tattoo made by using a needle and injecting some color into one's skin. Permanent eyeliner gives a non-melting line right underneath the eyelashes which makes your eyes look fantastic.

The name eyeliner can be a little confusing. It does not really mean it lasts forever. With time the color fades since new skin cells regenerate and appear to replace the old ones. However, in most cases people are satisfied with their looks from two to five years. The period of eyeliner's efficiency depends on one's lifestyle and skin type. In comparison to the use of regular eyeliner, permanent eyeliner looks rather efficient.

Why Are People Switching to Permanent Eyeliner?

Eyeliner is a favorite of many, for it is quick, easy and you can wake up and look as though you spent a significant portion of the day carefully applying. However there are many reasons why a person would choose permanent eyeliner;

And if you wear make-up on an everyday basis. You can just wake up and not have to worry about your eye liner melting or rubbing off of your face during the day. No matter what you do or what the weather's like.

• For those who are unable to draw a fine straight line (i.e. They may have shaky hands or suffer from arthritis) or have other similar issues. Permanent eyeliner can be very beneficial.
• For athletes or swimmers, traditional eyeliner does not work well when a person is sweating or underwater; permanent eyeliner can help with both aspects of that problem.
• For those who have recently undergone eye surgery. There are often periods of time when makeup can't be worn and this is when permanent eyeliner is extremely handy.

Types of permanent eyeliner

The usual association with permanent eyeliner is the artificial or "overdone" look. There are numerous styles, however. It can range from a super subtle effect to define and thicken your lash line to a dramatic and defined line. Here are a couple of common ones:

Lash Line Enhancement

This style is the more natural choice. The pigment is deposited directly into the lash line, between your lashes so it doesn't appear as if you're wearing a liner at all but rather as if you have longer and thicker lashes. This is perfect for those who want more definition in their eyes without the visible line.Many people that have never worn liner are initially apprehensive but start out with this style and once they love the result will go for something bolder.

Classic Upper Liner

This style features a thin or thick line applied above the lash line. There is an upper and lower lash line option here but often it is performed on just the upper lash line only. This style suits any age or shape of eye.

Winged / Cat Eye Liner

This style is exactly as it sounds, and means you will have a permanent winged liner look without the tedious work of creating a sharp winged look every morning.The artist will work with your eye shape and face to achieve the perfect angle. This can also be ideal for those with hooded eyes and may also prevent them from drooping.

Lower Lash Line Liner

This style is done with a pigment along the lower lash line and is often used as an enhancer to the upper line, or can be done on its own for a subtle pop.

Shaded Liner

Rather than the solid sharp line that often comes with permanent makeup, the shaded liner option will give you a softer, more smudged shadow look. Great for those that like an eyeshadow look but don't wish to commit the time every morning.

The permanent Eyeliner Procedure

Before Your Appointment

To get the results the artist will tell you to do a few things:

• Take off your eyelash extensions at least one week before your appointment
• Stop using Latisse or lash serums four weeks before
• Do not get Botox in the eye area for at least two weeks before
• Stop taking blood-thinning supplements like fish oil, vitamin E or high doses of vitamin C one week before
• Stop using retinol, AHAs and anti-ageing products around your eyes two weeks before
• Do not wear contact lenses on the day of the procedure. Bring your glasses instead
• Come to your appointment without any eye makeup on.

During the Procedure

The session usually takes one and a half to two hours from start to finish including the time we talk about what you want making your eyelid numb and the Permanent Eyeliner treatment.

We apply a cream to numb your eyelid and allow this to absorb for a little while. Most clients state that they can feel a pressure or light scratching feeling, nothing particularly painful. This is a highly sensitive zone for Permanent Eyeliner, however the numbing cream makes this manageable for most clients. Your Permanent Eyeliner artist uses a device to put the colour on your eyelid right where we decided. We already talked about the style, thickness and colour. You said it was what you wanted.

Immediately After

The immediate result of the treatment session your Permanent Eyeliner will appear darker and wider than the end result, this is due to the colour being deposited and slight swelling to the eyelids, you will feel a tightness and puffiness, this is normal, the majority of clients can continue with their day normally. Eye wear glasses may be suitable due to sensitivity to light,

The Healing Process

Permanent Eyeliner is actually one of the things to heal from. It is faster and more straightforward than things like microblading or lip blush. Knowing what to expect helps you not worry.

Days 1-2:

Your Permanent Eyeliner will be very thick and very dark. There will probably be some swelling on the eyelid which is to be expected due to the dark color and how your body reacts. It should go down in 1 or 2 days and may feel dry and tight.

Days 3-5:

Your skin will start to flake off like it is shedding its layer. Your Permanent Eyeliner will start to look lighter. The important thing to remember is to not pick or scratch. If you do you might pull out some of the colour. It could leave a scar.

Days 6-10:

The colour might look really light like it is almost gone. But do not worry this is normal. There is a layer of skin on top of the colour and it is just hiding it for now. This is what happens with all Permanent Eyeliner treatments.

Weeks 2-6:

As your skin gets better the colour will start to show up. It will be softer and more natural just like we wanted. By 4-6 weeks your Permanent Eyeliner is all. It is starting to look like it will when it is all done.

The Touch-Up Appointment

We need to see you in 6-8 weeks. This is a part of getting Permanent Eyeliner. We will check to see how the colour is doing, make sure it is even and make any changes we need to. At Elora’s PMU we think of this as the part of the treatment.

Permanent Eyeliner Aftercare

You need to take care of your Permanent Eyeliner for the 7-10 days. This makes a difference in how it looks when it is all healed.

For the 7-10 days:

• Keep your eyes dry so do not get water on them when you shower.
• Do not wear any eye makeup.
• Do not wear contact lenses until your eyes are all healed.
• Do not go swimming. Do anything that might hurt your eyes.
• Do not Touch your eyes.
• Try to sleep on your back so you do not hurt your eyes.
• Use the cream that your artist gives you and allow it to heal your eyes.

How Long will my permanent eyeliner last

That all depends on your skin. The amount of care you take of your permanent eyeliner. On average, it should last:

• 2 to 3 years if you have skin or are in the sun a lot
• 3 to 5 years if you have dry to normal skin and take good care of your Permanent Eyeliner

Some things can make your Permanent Eyeliner fade faster like being in the sun using certain products or having oily skin. If you want your Permanent Eyeliner to always look good you should get a colour refresh every 1-2 years.

Is Permanent Eyeliner Safe?

Yes it is safe when a qualified and certified artist does it in an environment with good quality pigments and new needles. The problems that can happen with eyeliner like infection or uneven color usually occur when someone who is not qualified does the procedure or does it in a dirty place.

Who Is an Ideal Candidate for Permanent Eyeliner?

Who Should Not Get It?

Pregnant or lactating individuals are not candidates for eyeliner application. Eye infections or any conditions of the eyelids are another contraindication for application. An Accutane client will need to wait 12 months post Accutane therapy prior to eyeliner application. Clients with keloid scarring should have the conversation with their artist.
